Santos Populares

Santos Populares in Lisbon:a festival everyone should experience at least once.

If you visit Lisbon during the month of June, you’ll quickly notice that something special is happening

The streets are filled with color, little flags pop up everywhere, the smell of grilled sardines fills the historic neighborhoods, and music becomes part of the city’s soundtrack. Welcome to the Santos Populares, one of the traditions most cherished by the Portuguese.

But what exactly are the Santos Populares?

The truth is that, for most Portuguese people, it’s not just a religious festival. It’s above all a huge popular celebration where friends, families, and neighbors come together to eat, dance, and enjoy the warm June nights.

If you visit Lisbon during the month of June, you’ll quickly notice that something special is happening.

Although there are several popular festivals in Portugal during the month of June, in Lisbon the main attraction is Santo António.

Born in the city in the 12th century, Saint Anthony is known as the matchmaker saint and remains a very special figure for the people of Lisbon.

Every year, on the evening of June 12, Lisbon transforms into a huge open-air party that lasts until dawn.

The streets come alive

The most traditional neighborhoods, such as Alfama, Mouraria, Graça, and Castelo, are decorated with thousands of colorful little flags.

Small stages pop up in squares and plazas, music plays nonstop, and practically every street has a festival.

Even those visiting Lisbon for the first time quickly sense that this isn’t a festival created for tourists. It’s a genuine celebration, experienced by the city’s own residents.

The scent that heralds the festival

There’s one thing that never goes unnoticed during the Santos Populares: the smell of grilled sardines, peppers, and basil—so characteristic of the Santos Populares celebrations.

In many neighborhoods, grills are set up right on the street, and the sardines are served simply, usually accompanied by bread or salad.

Even those who don’t usually eat fish end up trying it, because it’s part of the experience.

Manjericos (The famous bush basil plants)

Another very popular tradition is to give a small basil plant as a gift.

This small pot of basil is usually accompanied by a playful four-line poem.

One of the best-known goes:

“Oh, my dear Santo António,
Matchmaker beyond compare,
Find me a boyfriend,
Who is special and rare.”

There’s also an important rule: you shouldn’t smell the basil directly. The custom is to run your hand over the leaves and only then inhale the scent.

Marchas Populares (Popular Parades)

If there’s one moment that truly represents the Popular Saints, it’s the “Marchas Populares”.

On the night of June 12, various neighborhoods in Lisbon parade down Avenida da Liberdade with choreography, music, colorful costumes, and a great deal of pride in their neighborhood.

Lisboners have been following this parade for decades, and many spend months preparing each performance.

It’s a friendly competition, but one taken very seriously by those who participate.

The Weddings of Santo António

Another curious tradition is the Weddings of Santo António.

Every year, several couples get married on the same day, as part of an initiative organized by the city of Lisbon. It’s a tradition that has existed for decades and continues to be part of the festivities.

Is it worth visiting, Lisbon during the Santos Populares?

Without a doubt.

The monuments are there all year round. But the Santos Populares last only a few weeks and showcase a very special side of the city.

It’s an opportunity to experience Lisbon the way locals do: out on the streets, among friends, with music, food, and plenty of excitement.

If you’re in Lisbon during the month of June, set aside at least one night to stroll through the historic neighborhoods and immerse yourself in this tradition. It’s one of the most authentic experiences you can have in Portugal.

Tip Meet the Portuguese:

“If you visit Lisbon in June, we recommend starting the day by exploring the monuments and ending the night at the festivals in Alfama or Graça. That way, you’ll get the best of both worlds: the city’s history and one of its most authentic traditions.”
